From the sketch picture, we know that cone crusher is mainly combined with one concave and one mantle which is fixed steadily with one main shaft. The gap between them is crushing chamber. The main shaft stands in the crushing chamber with some leaning angles. When operating, it rotates by the red line of picture and swings by the green line of the picture at the same time. The crossing point is just the center where main shaft rotates and swings.

When the raw material enters into chamber, the rotating mantle with a high speed breaks materials into smaller. When the chamber is filled with materials, mantle crushes all the raw size by reducing speed. Whether the opening chamber or the closed chamber, the gap will never change unless the raw material is rather hard or some steels enter.
