The installation of pebble crusher product weightometers in January 2008 for control purposes also enabled an assessment of the change in crusher specific energy since that time. An estimate of the crusher feed rate can be made by correlating the feeder speed with the crusher feed rate, however prior to January 2008 there were also modifications made to the dimensions of the crusher feeder chutes which make this correlation invalid.
Telfer personnel believe that some improvements in the crusher specific energy had already been achieved prior to January 2008 due to a reduction in the target crusher close side setting, however this cannot be quantified. Figure 23 shows the monthly average pebble crusher specific energy since January 2008. The data includes single pebble crusher operation only. Since July 2008 there has been a noticeable increase in the crusher specific energy.
From January to July 2008 the average crusher specific energy was 0.317 kWh/t. During the most recent three months the crusher specific energy has averaged 0.451 kWh/t, which is an increase of 42 per cent.
